Common Succulent Problems and How to Fix Them
Most problems are easy to fix
Succulents are tough, and most issues come down to a few common causes — usually watering or light. Here’s how to spot and fix the most frequent problems.
Mushy, yellowing leaves
Cause: overwatering — the most common killer. Fix: stop watering immediately, let the soil dry out fully, and check the roots for rot. Remove any black, mushy roots and repot in dry, fast-draining mix.
Shrivelled, wrinkled leaves
Cause: underwatering. Fix: give the plant a thorough soak and it should plump back up within a day or two. This one is easy to reverse.
Stretched, leggy growth
Cause: not enough light, so the plant stretches toward it (etiolation). Fix: move it to a brighter spot. You can also behead and re-root a stretched succulent to start fresh.
Brown, scorched patches
Cause: sudden intense sun (sunburn). Fix: move it to slightly gentler light and introduce strong sun gradually. Scorched marks won’t heal but new growth will be fine.
Black stem or rot
Cause: root or stem rot from too much water. Fix: act fast — cut away all rotted parts, let the healthy cutting callous over for a few days, then re-root in dry soil.
Pests (mealybugs, etc.)
Cause: common sap-sucking pests, often white and cottony. Fix: dab them off with a cotton bud dipped in diluted neem or alcohol, and isolate the plant until clear.
Prevention is simple
- Use fast-draining soil and pots with drainage.
- Water only when fully dry.
- Give plenty of bright light.
- Check new plants for pests.
