How to Care for Your Succulents After They Arrive
Help your new plants settle in
Succulents and cacti go through some stress in transit, so a little care when they arrive helps them recover and thrive. Follow these simple steps for a strong start.
Unpack right away
Open the package as soon as it arrives and gently remove the plants. They’ve been in the dark, so handle them carefully and free any foliage secured for transit.
Let them rest and dry
Place them in a bright spot with indirect light for a few days to recover — don’t blast them with harsh direct sun immediately. Crucially, don’t water straight away; let any transit moisture dry out first.
Wait before watering
Give new succulents several days (even up to a week) before the first watering, especially if the soil is still slightly moist. After transit, dry is far safer than wet — overwatering now is the biggest risk.
Don’t repot immediately
Let the plant adjust for a week or two before repotting. Repotting straightaway adds stress on top of transit stress. When you do repot, use a fast-draining cactus/succulent mix and a pot with drainage.
Ease into the sun
If the plant will live in full sun, move it there gradually over several days so it acclimatises. A sudden jump to intense sun can scorch leaves that aren’t used to it.
Be patient
A little shrivelling or a dropped leaf after transit is normal. With bright light, careful watering, and time, your succulents will firm up and start growing strongly within a week or two.
