How to Water Succulents and Cacti Correctly

Watering is where most people go wrong

Succulents and cacti die far more often from too much water than too little. They’re built to store water and survive drought, so getting watering right is the single most important skill.

The “soak and dry” method

The golden rule: water thoroughly, then let the soil dry out completely before watering again. Soak the soil until water runs out the drainage holes, then leave it alone until it’s bone dry.

Check the soil first

Before watering, push a finger an inch or two into the soil. If it’s even slightly damp, wait. Only water when it’s completely dry. When unsure, it’s always safer to wait.

Water less in cool weather

Succulents need much less water in the cool or rainy season when they grow slowly or go dormant. Cut back watering significantly in winter and during the monsoon — overwatering then is especially risky.

Avoid wetting the leaves

Water the soil, not the plant. Water sitting in the rosette or on cactus bodies can cause rot, especially in humidity. Aim for the base.

Drainage is essential

Always use a pot with drainage holes and a fast-draining mix. Even perfect watering can’t save a plant sitting in waterlogged soil — the water must be able to escape.

Signs you’re getting it wrong

  • Overwatered: mushy, translucent, yellowing leaves; black stem.
  • Underwatered: wrinkled, shrivelled, drooping leaves.

Underwatered plants recover fast with a drink; overwatered ones are much harder to save — so err on the dry side.
